The Boston Red Sox jersey buried at the new stadium being built by the New York Yankees was sold for $175,100 at an Internet auction.
A construction worker, a fan of the Red Sox, buried the David Ortiz No. 34 jersey while working on the stadium's structure last summer in hope of bringing the rival Yankees bad luck when they move into their new $1.3 billion ballpark.
When Yankees officials learned of his actions, they had workers spend five hours digging through two feet of concrete to find the jersey. The team then donated the dirty, ripped shirt to raise money for the Boston-based Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
The week-long auction on EBay Inc., the world's largest Internet auctioneer, drew 282 bids from almost 20 states, according to a news release from the Jimmy Fund. The bid from Kevin Meehan, the owner of Imperialcars.com in Mendon, Mass., was the highest of 282 for the battered No. 34 David Ortiz jersey.
